Color in Retail Lighting

The color system that works in a dimly lit living room fails under 500-lux retail lighting. Colors appear washed out, and subtle differentiations between UI states become invisible. For POS interfaces, contrast ratios should target 7:1 minimum for all text (not the WCAG AA requirement of 4.5:1). Color should never be the only differentiator for state changes — always pair color with icons, text labels, or shape changes.

Interaction Patterns Unique to POS

POS terminals need interaction patterns that don't exist in phone design systems: a dedicated "assistance" button on every screen that summons staff, gesture shortcuts for common actions like void-item and apply-discount, and a "customer-facing" mode where the interface inverts to show a simplified view on the opposite side of the terminal. These patterns should be consistent across all screens and learnable within a single shift.
